About B Corporations

Human First Works is a values-based organization that was proud to become a Certified B Corporation in August 2023.

B Corporations are businesses that share a common goal: to be of benefit to the world and to strive to create a global economy that uses business as a force for good. Certified B Corporations are companies that have been independently verified as meeting the highest standards of social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose.

Certified B corporations help make positive changes by working to reduce inequality, incorporating sustainable practices to help the environment, creating strong communities, and creating high-quality job opportunities that give individuals a sense of purpose. B Corp Beliefs

Transcript

(Woman, voice-over): We have a dream that one day all companies will compete not only to be the best in the world, but the best for the world. Others share this dream and have begun to turn the dream into a community. This community signed a declaration of interdependence and invited others to join them.

Now more than 900 companies from 29 countries are turning our community into a global movement to redefine success in business. B Corporations use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems.

  • An eyewear company that disrupts an industry, and serves the poor.
  • A food service company that serves over 1 million meals to low-income public school students every week.
  • A manufacturer that goes green, and helps workers move from welfare to a career.
  • An online bookseller that recycles used books, and funds local libraries and global literacy.
  • An outdoor apparel company that stewards the environment.
  • An ice cream company that maintains its mission, post-sale.

B-corp is a certification that helps consumers identifythese change-makers. And investors make money and make a difference. As a community, we are passing laws across the country, creating a new kind of company that serves society and shareholders. We are leading a global movement of people using business as a force for good. Join us- “B” the change.

Our B Corp Certification
B Corporation certification is not a simple review of a product or service. It is a thorough screening of a company and the positive impact that it makes. In order to be certified as a B Corporation, a company must receive a score of 80 points or higher on the B Impact Assessment- a rigorous assessment of five impact areas: governance, workers, community, environment, and customers. B Corp Certification is a months-long process that involves thorough documentation of business practices in these impact areas.

Customers

The customers impact area evaluates a company’s value to its direct customers and the consumers of its products or services, including ethical and positive marketing, warranty and quality assurance of products and services, data privacy, data security, and more. Our products are specifically geared to helping underserved populations have equal access to information and tools on the web, and nearly 40% of our services are provided to nonprofit or other purpose drive organizations.

Community

We strive to support diversity in our community and are actively involved in giving back through speaking, volunteering, and pro bono work.

Workers

The workers impact area evaluates a company’s contribution to its employees’ financial, physical, professional, and social well-being. We strive to create a positive and engaging work environment for our team members which places emphasis on quality of life. We create jobs for American workers and all employees are paid a living wage as well as receiving equal access to benefits (flexible schedules, health insurance, career development, education stipends) regardless of if they are full- or part-time. Facilitators play a vital role in advancing their teams’ purpose as they allow every member to contribute to the decision-making process.

 Here’s What We Think About

Environment

The environment impact area evaluates a company’s overall environmental stewardship, including how the company identifies and manages general environmental impacts, its management of air and climate issues, water sustainability, and impacts on land and life. As a 100% remote company with exclusively digital products and services, we’re able to have an incredibly light footprint on the earth.

 Here’s What We Think About

Governance

The governance impact area evaluates a company’s overall mission, ethics, accountability, and transparency. Equalize Digital is a mission-locked organization that has written into its bylaws provisions for considering community and stakeholder interests regardless of company ownership. We practice open-book management with our team members and are values-driven.
